NextGen Player – Canada’s Premier Gaming Blog: Leaked Memo Shows Free Video Game For Every G-List Member

By Paul HunterUPDATE: I was just informed by a tsilon.ca founder that this perk is “Canada only at this time.” have fun, fellow Canucks! /UPDATERaise your hand if you’re old enough remember the Nintendo Power free Dragon Warrior I giveaway in the early 90′s. It was an incredible deal: purchase a subscription of Nintendo Power and they’ll send you a free copy of Dragon Warrior I. I remember subscribing simply because this deal was too good to be true. Check out the Enix America memo, dated November 1990, announcing the promotion.according to a leaked memo that came across my desk, the creators of Canada’s “first fraternity for gamers”, tsilon.ca, are preparing to 1-up this Nintendo Power promotion.the promotion, which the leaked document says could roll-out in mid-February, will entitle all G-List members to one free video game with a retail value equal to or less than $60.00 CDN. the offer is valid for all current generation video game platforms including Xbox 360, PS3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, PS Vita, PSP, and PC. the memo states that any game on these platforms are eligible, with the exception of limited editions and collector’s editions. Gaming accessories are also excluded.in the PDF of this memo I received, pieces of information were blacked out, including the names of the sender and receiver, the name(s) of the people who green lit this perk, and the exact location where this promotion will go live.a request to a tsilon.ca rep to substantiate the contents of the memo was replied with confirmation of a “free game for any active member.” Furthermore, I was told that 48-hour advance notice will be given before this promotion goes live.Click on the leaked memo below to enlarge:No information has been given as to what the “teaser” refers to, nor the process G-List members will need to follow to in order to redeem for their free game.upon asking what happens if 1,000 new members join the G-List community, a rep from the site said it’s for “every active member, no joke.” I started doing the math on 5,000 and 10,000 new members and couldn’t believe the potential cost of this promotion. in order to become a member of tsilon.ca, individuals must solve four locks that gate entry into the site. once in the site, G-List status is obtained after “leveling up” to 10, which is done through solving video game trivia questions, answering daily trivia questions, or participating in video game challenges. As noted in the leaked memo, G-List members will be eligible for the free video game.the Nintendo Power promotion is credited with attracting thousands of new subscribers to the monthly publication and helped launched the Dragon Warrior series in North America. according to Chris Kohler, author of Power Up, this promotion allowed Enix America to bring over the next three iterations of Dragon Warrior; moreover, Nintendo themselves profited immensely since the magazine was “essentially a 100-page monthly ad for Nintendo products”.One has to wonder if this G-List promotion will attract as much attention?

Long serving director at Nintendo, Nobuo Nagai, passes away – Australian Nintendo News Source – Vooks – 3DS – Wii- DS

One of Nintendo?s longest serving staff members has passed.

Nintendo has announced today that Nobuo Nagai, Senior Managing Director and Representative Director at Nintendo Japan has passed away. Up until the time of his death which was yesterday, he was the Senior Managing Director and Representative Director at Nintendo Japan. mr Nagai had been working at Nintendo since 1976, just short of 36 years, an amazing feat for anyone. In 2000 he become a Director at the company, and then a Managing Director in 2002. Just two years later he moved to Senior Managing Director and Representative Director roles. the names of the roles are very vague, however it means he was in charge of the division that develops handhelds. the Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi and 3DS—he would have been the man in charge of all of them.

There isn?t too much press about mr Nagai; he seemed to be a shy person with his name only mentioned by President Satoru Iwata a few times. It really isn?t too shocking; not every director of every company is in the spotlight. Nobuo Nagai passed away aged 66. It?s sad to say we don?t know much about his work, but if he was in charge of the handheld division then we kind of know what his work resulted in and that?s some good work.

Nintendo’s DLC Strategy Appears to Put the Company on the Right Track

Nintendo digital

Nintendo made headlines last week when it announced something many felt it should have had in place years ago: the Nintendo Network. The details remain sketchy at best and, like with details on the Wii U, it is likely we’ll be waiting until E3 in June before we’ve given a better idea of how the Network will actually come together. What little president Satoru Iwata did have to share about it was encouraging, and the same could be said for a lot of what Nintendo at least claims to be doing as it works to put this current disastrous financial year behind it.

Following Friday’s investors briefing, a Q&A session was conducted where Iwata and company provided many unspecific, but nonetheless promising answers about how the company plans to avoid suffering another money-losing year.

it doesn’t take an expert to identify one exceedingly obvious place Nintendo needs to improve: launch window software. I enjoyed Steel Diver and thought Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars was really good, but there wasn’t a whole lot else to enjoy at the launch of the 3DS or in the months afterward. (The first great game was The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, and that came months after launch and was not an original title.) Compare that with the Vita’s launch day lineup headlined by the likes of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Super Stardust Delta, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Lumines: Electronic Symphony and you can see how the 3DS’ launch wasn’t at the level it needed to be. With the Wii U coming out by the end of the year, Nintendo doesn’t want a repeat of the 3DS’ poor performance out of the gate, which was due to not just a $250 price tag, but also a lack of must-have games.

“What we should reflect on is to keep the momentum in the market, and as I mentioned before, it is important to release software seamlessly,” Iwata said during Friday’s Q&A. “Specifically, a new platform is likely to have a gap between the launch titles, which many developers want to release, and the second wave of software. it is indispensable to avoid such a gap in our future business. in determining the launch date of the Wii U, we need to take into account not only what to release at the launch period but how to keep the sales momentum after then. in the past, I mentioned that having strong momentum is very important for game platform businesses, and as a matter of course, we are now more convinced of that and we need to have a backup plan ready.”

as is the case with many of his other comments last week, this sounds good and I hope it’s true but we can’t be sure it really means anything until we actually see a list of titles set to be available alongside the Wii U later this year. After the problems with 3DS, though, it’s perfectly sensible for Nintendo to seek to make the launch lineup as strong as possible. Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime talked last summer about lessons the company learned from the launch of 3DS and noted, “We needed to have key franchises and stronger first-party titles.” Even if we don’t get a new Mario or Zelda HD on Wii U’s Day one, Nintendo realizing gamers expect more than Pilotwings and Nintendogs is a positive sign.

other areas needing improvement are the online and digital spaces, both of which are seemingly being addressed with the Nintendo Network. Downloadable content is one piece of that, and Nintendo sees two ways in which it can benefit. one of those is the revenue that will be brought in through the sale of DLC, whether that be a digital Wii Fit Plus-style add-on for a game like Wii Fit or additional levels in a Mario game, both of which were ideas Iwata mentioned.

Super Mario 3D Land

The other benefit it’s hoping the release of DLC will bring is for its games to remain current. Buying an older game isn’t always the most attractive option, but if that old game has been updated in a way that people continue to play it and talk about it, that could lead to sales of the game months or years down the line it might not have garnered otherwise. It’s a strategy Valve employed with free DLC for Team Fortress 2; the numerous updates it released over the years would bring back new players and get new ones to purchase the game (before it went free-to-play).

But as we’ve heard Nintendo and Iwata in particular insist time and again in recent months, the publisher doesn’t want to overdo DLC and upset fans who feel they aren’t getting the sort of value they’re used to. asking gamers to pay to spend too much for DLC “might be good for short-term profit,” Iwata said, “but it will not serve our mid-term and long-term business developments.”

this doesn’t preclude other developers from adopting the sort of microtransactions seen in social games. “If third-party developers would like to adopt this form of micro-transaction, and if this kind of business relationship between the developers and consumers is commonly accepted in Japan, we have no intention to decline it,” Iwata said. given that Nintendo needs all the third-party support it can get, that seems like a wise decision, as the company most certainly doesn’t want a situation like XCOM: Enemy Unknown being announced for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 (but not Wii U) to become a trend. Whether Nintendo’s flexibility on how third parties handle microtransactions will have much impact is unclear, but it certainly can’t hurt.

2 Gambling Stocks For Speculative Investors – Seeking Alpha

Speculative fever is creeping back into the market after five months of being in rally mode. I am cautious here, but as long as the "risk on" lever is down; I will take a shot with a small portion of my portfolio into speculative plays. here are two microcap stocks selling at around $2.50 a share that look like they have good prospects ahead of them and have low valuations.

Century Casinos (CNTY):

Century Casinos, inc. operates as an international casino entertainment company in the United States and internationally. The company owns and operates the Century Casino & Hotel Cripple Creek in Cripple Creek; the Century Casino Calgary in Alberta, Canada; the Century Casino & Hotel in Central City, Colorado; and the Century Casino & Hotel in Edmonton, Canada. it also operates ship-based casinos aboard, including the Silver Cloud, the Mein Schiff, and three Oceania Cruise ships. (Business Description from Yahoo Finance)

4 reasons Century Casinos has value at $2.50 a share:

  • The company has a solid balance sheet with approximately 20% of its market capitalization in net cash.
  • The stock is in a long term bottoming process. in addition, this stock was over $11 a share five years ago (see chart).
  • The stock is dirt cheap at 55 percent of book value and just 8 times cash flow
  • After breaking even in FY2010, CNTY is expected to make 12 cents a share in FY2011 and is projected at 17 cents a share in FY2012. Insiders own 20% of the company and have done little selling (less than $15,000 worth) over the last two years.

Majesco Entertainment Company (COOL):

Majesco Entertainment Company develops and markets video game products primarily for family oriented, mass-market consumers primarily in the United States, Europe, and the PAL territories. The company publishes video games for various interactive entertainment hardware platforms, including Nintendo’s DS, DSi, and Wii; Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable; Microsoft’s Xbox 360; and personal computers. (Business Description from Yahoo Finance)

4 reasons COOL is a buy at $2.60 a share:

  • The stock has a low five year projected PEG (.49) and sells for less than 7.5 times forward earnings. The median analysts’ price target on COOL is $4.
  • Given the company rapid EPS growth over the past five years (more than 70% annually) and low market capitalization, company could be an easy acquisition for larger player in the space.
  • It is selling in the bottom third of its five year valuation range based on P/E, P/CF, P/S and P/B.
  • It has a solid balance sheet with around 15% of its market capitalization in net cash and insiders are hanging tight (Sold only 2% of their shares over previous six months).

Disclosure: I am long CNTY.

Nintendo 3DS - Kingdom Hearts 10th Anniversary Logo, Bundle Unveiled - (2/7/2012)

can you believe that it has been ten years since the first members of the public left Destiny Islands and started an adventure that would take them to into a magical castle, under the sea, inside a whale and into the Cave of Wonders? Kingdom Hearts, originally released March 22nd 2002, will be ten in only a couple of months and, to celebrate, Square Enix have got some 3DS bundle shaped plans.

as well as the fairly pretty Kingdom Hearts 3DS announced a couple of weeks ago, you'll also get a copy of Kingdom Hearts: 3D and both Nintendo DS games – re:Coded and 358/2 Days. You'll also get some art postcards and a protective cover. the whole set will be 15,000 yen (nearly $200) and has yet to be announced for the US or Europe.

Important members of the Kingdom Hearts franchise have previously teased a HD collection for their anniverary year, although it has yet to be announced.

Nintendo Dsi Games - Nintendo 3DS European Launch Titles Officially Announced - (2/7/2012)

Nintendo has announced the launch titles for the Nintendo 3DS when it launches this March in Europe. Thirteen titles have been confirmed as shown below. The list shows that the Nintendo 3DS will have future unannounced ports of older games, examples such as the already announced The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time, and Star Fox 64.

Nintendogs + Cats: Continuing from where the popular DS series left off, Nintendogs + Cats will be a launch day title for the 3DS and will come out in three flavours: Golden Retriever, French Bulldog, and Toy Poodle. Facial recognition technology is set to make an appearance, taking advantage of the 3DS’ camera, allowing players to interact with their digital dog in new and interesting ways. Pets will attempt to mimic your movements, hide away from strangers, and even lick your face.

The Sims 3: The 3DS version will take advantage of the system’s wireless capabilities and allow players to trade characters with each other. rather ambitiously, EA are also touting a new feature that will use the 3DS camera to generate a character based on your likeness. Karma Powers bring interesting new ways of interacting with the game, such as shaking the console to make an earthquake, but beyond that it seems like business as usual for the little people simulator.

Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars: As the name suggests, Lego Star Wars III will be centered around the Clone Wars as depicted in the recent TV series. “Unique 3DS content” includes new characters and mystical bonus content, whatever that may be. Lego Star Wars has always received a warm reception from critics, so this is sure to be a crowd pleaser either way.

Super Monkey Ball 3D: The “3D” in the title is probably a good indicator of what to expect from 3DS games, much like the “DS” suffix for DS games. like the iOS version, Super Monkey Ball 3D employs the use of the gyroscope to tilt a monkey in a ball to the end of a board, collecting bananas along the way. in the 3DS version, the gyroscope is optional. The analogue stick (or Circle Pad) can be chosen instead for players more comfortable with the traditional way of playing, or for situations like car journeys where using the gyroscope may be impractical.

Rayman 3D: A port of Rayman 2: The Great Escape, little is known about what differentiates the 3DS version from the others, but Ubisoft are promising “major updates on key game play elements such as accessibility, progression and learning curve.” It’s worth noting at this point that the 3DS is fully backwards compatible with Nintendo DS games, so Rayman DS (another port of Rayman 2) will work fine.

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition: Capcom has billed the 3D edition as “exactly the same” as the HD versions, but added bonuses should enhance the experience on the small screen. an over-the-shoulder 3D view has been included, a conscious attempt to play on the main selling point of the console, something which a lot of games don’t seem to have explicitly tried. two control modes, Light and Pro, cater to old and new fans of the series, and Street Fighter fans can get together and wirelessly swap trophies with each other.

Ridge Racer 3D: Namco’s newest addition to the ongoing series about shamelessly sliding around corners in a souped-up car will feature tracks both new and old, in a move that the developers hope will emphasise the franchise’s 18-year history. to make the game easier for newcomers, a new drift button is included allowing players to pull off tricky corner stunts with ease. but Ridge Racer’s biggest advantage in the launch lineup is the sense of speed that’s sure to be impressive on a 3D screen, so any new features come second to the big feature of being able to slide around at speed in 3D.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars: Ubisoft has been surprisingly secretive about Shadow Wars, but what is known is that the game will be turn-based. Joystiq uncovered comments from creative lead Julian Gollop, but without any official word from Ubisoft it’s worth taking Gollop’s comments with a grain of salt. according to Gollop, Shadow Wars will have “more of an Advance Wars feel,” and works around controlling a team of six, each with their own unique abilities. Characters accumulate points that can be spent on teamwide benefits, such as airstrikes, or individual benefits, such as rapid fire. Data exchange and the like won’t be making an appearance, but regardless of any special 3DS features, it sounds like Ubisoft has an interesting title on their hands.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell 3D: The series’ 3D debut brings the third entry in the series, Chaos Theory, to the 3DS. Critically acclaimed and considered by some to be the best in the series, Chaos Theory revolves around Sam Fisher trying to quell the brewing storm in the Korean Peninsula, tangling himself up in conspiracies and the like along the way. Hacking has been redesigned into a 3D puzzle of sorts, while lock picking will take advantage of the Slide Pad to provide a more interesting way of picking locks than the tiresome “twiddle the analogue stick.”

Pilotwings Resort: Using the popular Mii characters players will have already made on the Wii, Pilotwings Resort is the sequel to the 1993 SNES classic Pilotwings. Resort takes place on Wuhu island, apparently the same place that Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort take place. three game modes have been confirmed: piloting, hang gliding, and rocket belt hovering.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D: Beating FIFA to the football punch is undoubtedly something Konami is proud of, and fans will be pleased to hear that unique features such as a Stadium Editor will be available from the start. PES 3D uses a camera view that sits closer to the player’s shoulders rather than the usual TV-style top down view. Konami are hoping that the unique view will show off the 3D features in greater detail, but a hands-on preview of everybody Plays found the view “had the potential to be quite disorienting,” so it might be worth holding off until some reviews trickle in.

Samurai Warriors: Chronicles: A new addition to Koei’s Warriors series, Chronicles lets players create their own character based on their own likeness, which the developers hope will mean players become more attached to their character. Up to four playable characters at a time are permitted, so players can switch controlling character in realtime for quicker battles without so much character travelling. Samurai Warriors enjoys a warm reception in Japan, so expect this to sell well in Nintendo’s birth country.

Asphalt 3D: The last title on the list, and the second racer, lets players race around 17 tracks in 40 licenced cars from the likes of Lambourghini and Bugatti. Gyroscope controls are an optional extra, allowing you to control the car and view it from different angles in your garage. Appealing to the arcade racer crowd, Asphalt 3D features the usual gratuitous helpings of nitro boost, as well as eight different game modes to keep the gameplay fresh.

“out of this list,  Street Fighter, Splinter Cell, and Super Monkey Ball 3D interests me the most”

Weekly Nintendo downloads debut Resident Evil Revelations demo, Lock’N Chase

A trial of Resident Evil Revelations can be downloaded (requires 1149 blocks to be saved on your memory card) and there will be other demos available in the coming weeks.
