5 Things You Didn’t Know About The Nintendo DSi
Screen and chassis upgrades aside, changes to the DSi went more than skin deep. Here’s run down of some of the things you might not have known about the DSi.
1. What does the i stand for?
It’s not a copy of the iPhone but more of a “subjective use of the term I” and according to our friends over at TechRadar it’s also in reference to the extra camera on the DSi that gives the DSi it’s own take on things.
2. The days of home brew gaming are over.
In the DS you could store games in the portable memory card for storing your games but it also let you download illegal games onto the memory. There will be no more of that.
3. Games will be region locked.
To try and prevent piracy, games can’t be moved across borders.
4. The DSi will no longer be cheaper overseas.
The new locking powers mean that you won’t be able to send a friend to buy the handheld device for cheaper overseas. Just a bit annoying.
5. The original design of the DSi included two game slots.
Planning of the DSi light obviously took place over a number of years and an early prototype originally had designs for two game card slots. The feature (or features) lent themselves to a rather bulky frame, much to the annoyance of Nintendo’s Entertainment Analysis and Development division.
“There were a lot of requests among gamers, of course, and from in house as well, for two slots,” said Nintendo. “We also thought that would be good, and, even though we were aware of the drawback of increased size, we decided to proceed with two slots. But when the team made an actual model and I held it in my hands, all I could think was, ‘It’s so big!”
